nonnative x SUICOKE
Characterised by its toe loop and broad strap across the bridge of the foot, the HUNTER SANDAL features an added crescent shaped cushion under the instep offering added ergonomic comfort, while a premium mesh fabric applied to the bridge strap provides extra softness on the skin. The thong style MARINER SANDAL, which also includes the added instep cushioning, features a striking contrast between its chunky sole and sleek straps.
Both styles make use of thick VIBRAM® sole units, with contours at the forefoot and heel, aiding a smooth step and offering excellent cushioning and grip. Both styles also feature adjustable straps for a perfect fit.
Harnessing the outstanding design and functionality of SUICOKE sandals at its base, nonnative’s fine-tuning of core elements such as the sole shape and thickness, strap width and overall volume, two new original designs have been born. Both models come in rich tonal BEIGE and BLACK.
About this collaboration
from nonnative designer Takayuki Fujii
I moved out to the beach two years ago and since the move a lot of things have changed. Not just with life, but also my wardrobe. Summer shoes to me = beach sandals, sports sandals, slip-ons and espadrilles. Of course everybody wears those. In Tokyo I would too, but moving out to the seaside they became the norm. It just felt so much better. I didn’t actually own a pair of SUICOKE until that point, but it turned out the founder, an old friend, was also living in the same area, and we got reacquainted and this project just naturally stemmed from that. My request was to make an espadrille that you could wear socks with, which was the chukka, and a sports sandal that was like a Jutta Neumann leather sandal. I made these requests over a year, wear tested them last summer and now they are finally released this year. For me who travels everyday between the beach and the city, these work well in both.
